Otoplasty (Otopexy) – Ear Reshaping Surgery

What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty, also known as otopexy, is a surgical procedure that corrects the shape, size, or position of the ears. It is commonly performed to set back ears that protrude, reduce overly large ears, or improve asymmetry. The goal of the procedure is to create a natural, balanced appearance that complements the rest of the face.

Benefits of Otoplasty

  • Corrects protruding or prominent ears

  • Improves facial balance and proportion

  • Boosts self-confidence and comfort in appearance

  • Provides long-lasting, natural-looking results

  • Involves minimal scarring, usually hidden behind the ear

The Procedure

Otoplasty is typically performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s age and preferences. During the surgery, small incisions are made behind the ear to access the cartilage. The cartilage is then reshaped, repositioned, or secured with sutures to achieve the desired contour. Once complete, the incisions are closed carefully, leaving scars that are well-hidden in the natural creases of the ear.

Recovery and Aftercare

  • A dressing or head bandage is applied immediately after surgery to support healing.

  • Mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising may occur in the first few days and are manageable with medication.

  • Most patients return to work or school within 7 to 10 days.

  • Results are visible immediately after surgery and continue to refine as swelling subsides.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Otoplasty can be performed on both children (generally age 5 and above) and adults. Ideal candidates are those who:

  • Have ears that protrude or appear asymmetrical

  • Feel self-conscious about the appearance of their ears

  • Are in good general health with realistic expectations
